Parthena (Gilbert) Pierce

Parthena Pierce, age 101, passed away at her residence at Green Tree Assisted Living, on Oct. 22nd. She was born July 4, 1910 to Bertha Schurtz and Rolla Gilbert of Waltonville and lived her entire life in Jefferson County. Mrs. Pierce was an elementary school teacher beginning in 1927, teaching for 45 years and serving as Principal of Farrington Consolidated School from 1960 until she retired in 1975. She is survived by a daughter, Doris Earls Lortie, four grandchildren: Tim Lortie (wife Karla), Donald Lortie (wife Karyn), Janet Lavorgna (husband Vincent), and Jennifer Peters (husband Paul), and seven grandchildren: Emily, Erin and Matthew Lortie, Terry and Corey Peters, and Tessa and Jeremy Lavorgna. Also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a grandson Gene Lortie, her husband Parker Pierce, her parents, two sisters and three brothers. Mrs. Pierce had been active in the Retired Teachers’ Association, had been an officer in the local AARP, and was a member of the Wells Chapel Baptist Church. She enjoyed the social activities at Green Tree and rooting for her favorite team, The Cardinals. Funeral services will be at Osborn Funeral Home, Dix, IL, on Wednesday, Oct. 26th , 2011 at 11 a.m. with Marty Mills Officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home on Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the Farrington Grade School PTO, or the donor's choice, and will be received at the Osborn Funeral Home, PO Box 130, Dix, Illinois 62830.Note: Parthena's first husband was Verner William Earls (1915-1967, buried at West Salem Cemetery, JCI)
