J. L. Porter died this morning at two o’clock at the family home in Hopewell neighborhood. Mr. Porter had been in poor health for a year.

He was born near Edinburgh, Ill. September 8, 1868, and located in Jefferson County about 33 years ago.

Mr. Porter served a term as assessor of Mt. Vernon township and was a man of good business judgment.

Mr. Porter was converted at the age of 14 years, and had ever since been a faithful and consecrated member of the M. E. Church and at the time of his death he was a member of the Hopewell M. E. Church and superintendent of the Sunday School.

Mr. Porter was greatly interested in the work of the church and Sunday school and gave freely of his time and means to promote the cause of religion. He was an earnest worker in both church and Sunday school and impressed everyone by his zeal and the sacrifices he made in a cause most dear to him. He will be missed in the church and community of which he was an honored and respected member.

As a citizen, he was an asset to the community and his life was full of earnest deeds and replete with efforts for good.

Mr. Porter was married December 3, 1890 to Lotta B Bradley of Christian county.

He is survived by his widow and one son; Morris Porter, and one sister, Ella Porter, who makes her home with the family. One brother Peter Porter lives at Edinburgh, Ill.
