Neal Campbell Purnell
Neal Campbell Purnell, 75, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 3:16 pm on February 25, 2024. He was born April 8, 1948 in Perry County, Illinois to the late Harry Purnell and Virginia (Campbell) Purnell. Neal married Kaye (Beckham) Purnell, or Kaye Kaye, as he called her on January 18, 1980 in Carterville, Illinois. They attained 44 years of marriage. Neal left behind his wife, Kaye; daughter, Amanda Bathon and husband, Christopher of Mount Vernon; bonus son, Rob Emery and wife, Susan of Mount Vernon; grandsons, Robbie Emery, Chalin Bathon, and Slade Emery; and granddaughter, Wren Bathon. Neal's family was small, but his heart was so kind that he made many more feel like family including Paralee Scrivner. Neal was welcomed to his eternal home by his grandparents; parents; many dear friends; and the biggest piece of his heart that has been missing...his grandson, Hunter Marlow. Neal was in the National Guard as a young man. He proudly served 30 years on the City of Mount Vernon Fire Department, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant. Neal was an extremely talented musician. He was self-taught and played by ear. If he had a song to figure out, rather it be on a electric guitar, bass, or his family's favorite steel guitar, you could just listen to him get it right after a few strums or slides. He played in many bands. His most recent was the Liberty Road Band. His most precious music played was for his church, West Salem Trinity. Neal was a devoted Christian, sharing his faith with anyone who would listen. Neal experienced life through the eyes of a child. He loved fishing, the ocean, and his grandchildren. He loved watching the Emery boys play basketball, baseball, and hill climb. He shared his love of nature and music with Amanda's kids. At Neal's request, there will be no visitation. A celebration of Neal's life will be held at a later date. Neal's final resting place will be at the Newton Marlow Cemetery. Memorial's may be made in his honor to HEM Caretaking Services, LLC to continue his grandson's legacy. Call Hughey Funeral Home at 618-242-3348 or visit hugheyfh.com for further information.
