Sarah Jane (Rich) Williams Richards

Sarah Richards Dies at Age 88 Rites on Sunday

Mrs. Sarah Jane Richards, of 1904 Conger Avenue, died at 8:15 o'clock last night at Jefferson County Memorial Hospital. Her death occurred on her 88th birthday.

Mrs. Richards was born in Crawford county June 16, 1862, the daughter of Isaaih and Lucretia Rich. She came to Jefferson county with her parents at the age of eight and had been a resident ever since.

She fell last Monday evening while walking across the floor and broke her hip. Her condition was serious from the first, and she succumbed last night.

She was married in 1889 to R.A. Richards. Her husband died in 1936.

Surviving are four sons, and two daughters.

The sons are Arthur "P.R." Richards, Everett Richards and Walter Richards of Mt. Vernon and Lester Richards of Chicago. The daughters are Mrs. Ruth Myers and Mrs. Stella Crocker of Mt. Vernon.

Also surviving are three children by her first marriage, to Sam Williams. They are John Williams and Jim Williams of Mt. Vernon and Mrs. Vina Franks of West Frankfort.

Mrs. Richards was a member of the Logan Street Baptist church.

Funeral services will be held at the Logan Street Baptist church Sunday afternoon at 1:30. The Rev. Kyle Wyatt will officiate and burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.

The body will remain at Myers Chapel, where friends may call at any time after 2:30 pm today. The body will be taken to the church at 12:5 pm Sunday and will lie in state until the funeral hour.

Note from Sandy: her first husband was Samuel Barton Williams and they had four children together and then divorced. Samuel kept the four children and raise them with help from his parents. Samuel is my maternal great great grandfather. Their children were: Jonathan Isaiah "J.I" Williams (1880-1969), James Calvin Williams (1882-1950), Vina Jane Williams (1885-1972) and Cora Mae Williams (1886-1913).
