Laylen M. Richardson

Laylen M. Richardson, 86, of Opdyke died 6:46 a.m. Dec. 9, 2004, at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

He was retired from Illinois Power, where he had worked for 37 years and was a line foreman at the time of his retirement.

Mr. Richardson was born Nov. 17, 1918, in Jefferson County to Delbert and Anna (Osborn) Richardson.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Sunday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Mike Steed will officiate. Burial will follow in Salem-Mateer Cemetery in Wayne County. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Richardson is survived by sons Dennis M. Richardson and wife Pam of Mt. Vernon and Glen S. Richardson and wife Sara of Mt. Vernon; daughters Karen Frederick and husband Randy of Macungie, Pa., and Deena Petersen and husband Dean of Woodlawn; grandchildren Amanda Felty, Aaron Richardson, Mike Petersen, Jan Petersen, Tyler Richardson, Drew Rawls, Paul Green, Kathy Snyder, Jenni Frederick, Desiree Frederick and Rachel Frederick; several great-grandchildren; brothers Harold Richardson and wife Naomi of Mt. Vernon and Bob Richardson and wife Ethel of Mt. Morris; a sister, Peggy Trout and husband Don of Belle Rive; and several nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by a special friend, Zela Harshbarger of Mt. Vernon.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Raymond, Melvin, Hasten and Bill.

Mr. Richardson was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He was a member of Logan Street Baptist Church, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 702, Opdyke Ruritan Club, a 4-H leader in Jefferson County and a volunteer fireman with the Jefferson Fire Protection District for 35 years. He loved to hunt and fish.
