James Boyd Riddle, 75, of Route 5, Mt. Vernon, was fatally injured at 4:00 pm Saturday when a pony hitched to a cart ran away and crashed into a post.

Mr. Riddle, a retired farmer, died at 6:00 am Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital, 14 hours after the accident. The pony was also killed.

Mr. Riddle, who lived alone, northeast of the city near the Tolle road, had two ponies which he used for transportation when visiting or going to the grocery store. In the accident Saturday the frightened pony crashed through a gate opening, hitting posts which wrecked the cart. Mr. Riddle suffered fatal head injuries.

Funeral services for Mr. Riddle will be held Tuesday at 2:00 pm at the Pulley Funeral Chapel. The Rev Oren Weatherford will officiate and burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Pulley Funeral Home, where friends may call after 4:00 pm today.

Mr. Riddle was born December 25, 1890 at Cornettville, Ky., the son of Newell and Polly (Hawkins) Riddle.

In 1911 he was married to Minnie Adkins, who preceded him in death.

Surviving are one son, David Riddle of Detroit, Mich.; five daughters, Mrs. Hazel Brown of Hamilton, Ohio, Mrs. Bonnie Newcomb of Chicago, Mrs. Nola Shetterly of Baltimore, Md., Mrs. Nellie Holcomb of Detroit, Mich., and Mrs. Elma Bowdler of Mt. Vernon; two brothers, Babe Riddle of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Crit Riddle of Mt. Vernon, Ky.; three sisters, Mrs. Alice Anderson, Mrs. Mary Fields and Mrs. Cis Thompson, all of Cumberland, Ky.; 27 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
