Robert Maynor Russell
Robert Maynor Russell, age 88, formerly of Fairfield Road, Mt. Vernon died 12:30 p.m. March 19, 1997, at the Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor. Bob was a retired welder and mechanic and was well known for his welding skill in the Southern Illinois oil fields as well as at the Mt. Vernon Car Mfg. Co. Mr. Russell was born June 10, 1908, at Woodlawn, a son of George and Nell (Maynor) Russell and was raised by Will and Nellie Stewart after his parents died at an early age. He married Lillian Brown on Sept. 22, 1933, in Mt. Vernon. Lillian survives and now resides at the Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor. For many years prior to entering the Countryside Nursing Home, Bob and Lillie enjoyed cruising the country in their R.V. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Kenneth Holland officiating. Those attending the services should go directly to the chapel at the Memorial Gardens on Friday afternoon. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today. Bob was in the U.S. Navy enlisting as a A.S. USN 1 on Aug. 6, 1943 and receiving an honorable discharge.(line not legible) the U.S. Naval Repair Base in San Diego, Calif. (line not legible) Industrial Command at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, Calif. Bob served as a volunteer fireman for many years and remembered well his experience in helping to fight the disastrous fire that destroyed the east side of the square many years ago. Bob was a member of Old Union Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Russell is survived by his wife, Lillie as well as several nieces and nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; a brother, Harold Russell, and a sister, Florence Carpenter. For more information you may call the Hughey Funeral Home at 242-3348.
