Archie L. Sanders

Principal of Wayne City High School Is Dead

Funeral for Archie L. Sanders To Be In High School Gym Monday

WAYNE CITY - Archie L. Sanders, Wayne City high school principal, died suddenly at 6 p.m. yesterday at age of 48.

Death came in Fairfield Memorial Hospital, where he had been rushed late in the afternoon when he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. He lived only about a half hour after reaching the hospital.

Mr. Sanders worked as usual at school Friday, although he did not feel well. His condition became critical in the late afternoon.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the high school gymnasium, conducted by the Rev. Harry Hooker and the Rev. Lloyd Trotter. The body will lie in state at Richardson Chapel in Wayne City afater 3 p.m. today. Burial will be in Thomason cemetery.

Mr. Sanders was born at Keenes April 10, 1905, the son of Lee and Elizabeth (Merritt) Sanders. On June 15, 1926, he was married to Golda Wood, who died in 1938.

Mt. Vernon Graduate

He was a graduate of Mt. Vernon Township High School and received his A.B. degree from Southern Illinois University and a Master's degree in education from the University of Illinois.

Mr. Sanders was a member of the Wayne City Missionary Baptist church and at different times served as superintendent of the Sunday School and as a teacher. He held one post or the other continuously for more than 20 years.

He was a past master of Orel Lodge No. 759 A.F. & A.M. at Wayne City, a charter member of the Wayne City Rotary Club and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

During his 26-year tenure as principal of Wayne City high school he also served at times as basketball coach.

Mr. Sanders is survived by his second wife, the former Dorothy Talbert; three sons, Richard of Mt. Vernon, Robert of the U.S. Navy, now stationed in Boston, and Kent at home; two daughters, Mrs. Annabel Webb of Washington, ILL. and Sandra at home; five brothers, Ray of Keenes, Earl and Harold of Wayne City, Ernest of Carbondale, and Wilford of Mason City, ILL; a half brother, Bill Sanders of Keenes; one sister, Mrs. Lillian Crenshaw of Mascoutah; a half sister, Mrs. Pearl Robbins of LeRoy, ILL.; and four grandchildren.
