Charles Glenn Sargent
Charles Glenn Sargent, 23 year old teacher and coach at Rome Consolidated grade School at Dix, collapsed at his desk in a classroom at 3:10 pm yesterday and died suddenly. Mr. Sargent was sitting at his desk and talking to students in the classroom, shortly before close of the school day, when he was stricken by an apparent heart attack. The death of the well liked young teacher and basketball coach came as a shock to his many friends in Dix area and all of Jefferson County. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:00 pm at the Boyd Christian Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Wayne Shaw of Bloomington, Ind. and the Rev. Glenn Hawkins of Dix will officiate and burial will be in Boyd Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Osborn Funeral Home in Dix, where friends may call after 2:00 pm Sunday. Mr. Sargent was born September 6, 1939 at Dix. the son of Lloyd and Isabelle (Meadows) Sargent. He was a graduate of Rome consolidated Grade School, Woodlawn high school, Mt. Vernon Community College and Southern Illinois University. He was a Sunday School class teacher at Boyd Christian Church. He was well known in this area as a basketball coach and referee. Besides his parents, his is survived by three sisters, Cleta Mae Sargent, Carolyn Kay Sargent and Connie Fay Sargent all at home, and his grandmothers, Hattie Meadows and Ethel Sargent Jones, both of Dix.
