Robert “Bob” Owen Sheridan

Robert “Bob” Owen Sheridan, 68, of Carbondale and formerly of Mt. Vernon, died 1:20 a.m. Nov. 25, 2004, at Carbondale Memorial Hospital in Carbondale.

He was an art professor at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and prior to that taught at Rend Lake College.

Mr. Sheridan was born Jan. 17, 1936, in Mt. Vernon to Thomas O. and Carrie I. (Eubank) Sheridan.

Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Oakwood Cemetery. The Rev. Melvin Larson will officiate. Those attending the services are asked to go directly to the cemetery on Saturday afternoon. No public visitation will be held per request of Mr. Sheridan.

Mr. Sheridan is survived by a brother, Gerald R. Sheridan and wife Delores of Mt. Vernon; two sisters, Patricia C. Hunter of Bluford and Ester Porter of Mt. Vernon; a step-granddaughter, Amber Moore of West Frankfort; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, David Richard Sheridan.

Mr. Sheridan served in the infantry in the Panama Canal Zone with the U.S. Army, taught at Rend Lake College and later became a professor at SIU, teaching art, painting, print making, drawing and art history. He was best known for his woodcuts of Native Americans and etchings made while teaching in Papua, New Guinea.

He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Mt. Vernon.
