Leota (Mason) Jones Shew
Mrs. Leota Jones Shew Dies; Rites Here Wednesday Mrs. Leota (Jones) Shew, a former Mt. Vernon resident, died at 6:40 a.m. Saturday at the home of her son, Merritt Jones in Bakersfield, Calif. She was 82 years, nine months, and 17 days old. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Myers Chapel with the Rev. Eugene Holcomb officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery. The body will lie in state at Myers Chapel where friends may call after 5:00 p.m. tomorrow. Mrs. Shew was born April 17, 1878, in Chesterville, Ill., the daughter of Warren D. and Nancy (Brown) Mason. Her first husband, Thomas Lowell Jones, died in 1919. She later married George W. Shew, who preceded her in death Jan. 3, 1958. She was also preceded in death by one son. Survivors include three sons, Archie Jones of Mt. Vernon, Edwin Jones of St. Louis, Mo., and Merritt Jones of Bakersfield, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Maurine Carter of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Gladys Beniard of Gary, Ind., and Mrs. Edna Newell of Waltonville; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
