Glen Skelton
Glen Skelton, 87, of Mt. Vernon, died 6:44 p.m. Aug. 25, 2006, at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. He was born May 20, 1919, in Broughton to William and Flora (Finley) Skelton. On Aug. 31, 1940, he married Mildred Marie Wilkerson in St. Louis. He was proudly married to Mildred for more than 65 years before she preceded him in death on Dec. 26, 2005. He had retired from road construction work. Services are set for 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. The Rev. Jesse Allen will officiate. Visitation is set for 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. Burial will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. The chaplain of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141 will conduct a military flag presentation. Survivors include a son, Larry G. Skelton of Spanish Lake, Mo.; daughters Alice Marie Hammers of Collinsville and Karen Sue Houston of Mt. Vernon; grandchildren Jeff and Jason Houston, Brittany Pickett, Jerry Hammers and Janice Hammers-Travis; great-grandchildren Steven and Brittany Travis; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter-in-law Renie Skelton; grandchildren Brian Hammer and Donnie “Hauk” Skelton; five brothers and six sisters. Glen was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of Nason Free Will Baptist Church and an active member of the Laborer’s International Union of North America Local 1197 since April 1959.
