Homer R. Smith Jr. 77, of Ashley died at 11:20 p.m. Monday, August 20, 2001, at St. Mary's/Good Samaritan Hospital.

He was born on Jan. 16, 1924, in Jefferson County, son of Homer R. Sr. and Theodora (Walker) Smith.

He married Louise A. Germann on July 1, 1943, in St. Louis and she survives.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Smith is survived by one son, Pastor Tom Smith of Ashley; two daughters, Sheila Maher of Carrollton, Texas, and Darla Wexstten of Mt. Vernon; one sister Maxine Reid of Mt. Vernon; eight grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Mr. Smith was a retired farmer. He was a member of First Community Church and American Legion Post 141 in Mt. Vernon. He was a School Board member for several years at Woodlawn High School and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Services willbe held at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Community Church with Bill Waller and Pastor Bob Mathes officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and until noon on Thursday at Hughey Funeral Home, then from 1 p.m. until the time of services Thursday at the church. A military flag presentation will be held by the chaplain of American Legion Post 141 in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the First Community Church building fund and will be accepted at the funeral home.
