Opal Louise Smith, age 90, of Mt. Vernon, died 8:10 a.m. Monday, May 18, 2009, at Mt. Vernon Residential Living Center.

She was born Wednesday, Oct. 2, 1918, in Jefferson County., Rome Township, daughter of Guy and Ora Belle (Howard) Williams.

She married William D. Smith on Sept. 21, 1939, in Mt. Vernon, and he preceded her in death.

Opal is survived by a son, Larry D. Smith of Mt. Vernon; a daughter, Joyce L. Barrett of Tucson, Ariz.; four grand children, Lincoln and wife Lynne of Ann Arbor, Mich., Sean Smith of Eldorado, Kevin and wife Marisa Barrett of Phoenix, Ariz., and Paul Barrett also of Phoenix, Ariz.; four great-grandchildren, Hannah and Caleb Smith of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Max and Samantha Barrett of Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother, D.C. "Doyle" and wife Shirley Williams of Mt. Vernon; one sister-in-law, Alice Green and husband Jim of Mt. Vernon; one brother-in-law, Paul Smith of Champaign; and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents; four brothers, Herman, Therman, Ernest and Rolla; and three sisters, Erma Campbell, Marie Jones and Reva Sheehan, preceded her in death.

Opal was a homemaker and seamstress working for Albert's and operating the Pin Cushion for many years. She enjoyed the game of golf which she took up after her family was raised.

She was a member of the Central Christian Church.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon with Mr. J.Howard Kraps officiating. Internment will be held at Mt.
