Thomas E. Summers

Thomas E. Summers, 80, of Mt. Vernon died 12:20 p.m. Feb. 8, 2005, at his home. He worked at Freeman United No. 3 as a coal miner.

Mr. Summers was born Oct. 2, 1924, in Benton to Oran H. and Ulla (Kearney) Summers.

He married Wanda (Brown) Summers July 15, 1948, in Benton; she survives.

Funeral services will be held 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon. The Revs. David Mays and John Murphy will officiate. Burial will follow at Wolfe Prairie Cemetery in rural Jefferson County. Military flag presentation will be conducted by the chaplain of American Legion Post 141 of Mt. Vernon. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Summers is survived by his wife, Wanda Summers of Mt. Vernon; sons Michael E. Summers and wife Susan of Scheller and Douglas W. Summers and wife Angie of Bonnie; daughters Charlotte D. Huntman and husband Mike of Mt. Vernon and Renee D. Smyser and husband Pete of Ottawa; five grandchildren, Lee Summers and wife Becky of Bonnie, Matthew Huntman and wife Jonica of Columbia, Jonathan Huntman of Mt. Vernon, Josh Summers of Bonnie and Kimberly Summers of Scheller; a great-grandchild, Cade Summers of Bonnie; a brother, Norman Summers and wife Betty of Highland, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Darrel Summers; and four brothers.

Mr. Summers served in the United States Army from March 1943 to Nov. 2, 1945.

He was a member of Marco Full Gospel Church, where he was an elder, and of the United Mine Workers of America.

He loved the outdoors, as well as hunting and fishing.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the organization of the donor's choice and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O.
