James L. Tate

JAMES L. TATE DIES AT AGE 80 AT FARM HOME

James L. Tate, well known Jefferson county farmer, died at 4:26 a.m. today, May 1, 1957, at his home on RFD 6, Mt. Vernon, Ill. He was 80 years, two months and 20 days of age. Mr. Tate, who was known to his many friends as "Uncle Jim," suffered a stroke on his way home from Good Friday services at Union Chapel Church.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Union Chapel Church, of which he had been an active member for the past 40 years. The Rev.Harry Fish and the Rev. Eugene Fox will officiate and burial will be in the Union Chapel Cemetery. The body will be removed from the Pulley Funeral Home to the family home, where friends may call after 10 a.m. Thursday.

Mr. Tate was born February 11, 1877 in Jefferson county, the son of James R. and Martha (McCormick) Tate.

He was a member of a family of 14 children.

He was first married to Estella Bruce, who preceded him in death May 26, 1953.

He was later married to Nell Webb, who survives.

Mr. Tate was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Dix, Ill. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Glenn L. of Tulsa, Okla., Odel of Evansville, Ind., and J. Hollis of Belle Rive, Ill.; one daughter, Gladys Stonecipher of Mt, Vernon; eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; two brothers, I. E. and Manson Tate, both of Texico, Ill.; and a sister, Libby (Mary Elizabeth) Phillips of Mt. Vernon, Ill.
