George W. Taylor

George W. Taylor, 91, of Mt. Vernon died 9:25 a.m. Feb. 23, 2006, at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor. He was a farmer, oil driller and retired miner from Freeman Coal Co.

Mr. Taylor was born Nov. 21, 1914, in Jefferson County to Ralph and Daisy Mae (Quinn) Taylor.

He married Clarice C. (Bean) Taylor Aug. 17, 1938, in Poole, Ky.; she preceded him in death Jan. 8, 2003.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the chapel at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn. The Rev. Kenneth Oathout will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, with full military honors conducted by members of Mt. Vernon American Legion Post 141. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Taylor is survived by a brother, James R. Taylor of Denver, Colo.; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and two brothers-in-law, Alfred "Mugs" Bean of Mt. Vernon and Henry Fenton of Mt. Vernon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and two sisters, Betty Mae Fenton and Viola Martingill.

Mr. Taylor was a veteran and member of the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II and a member of Waltonville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9153 and Central Christian Church in Mt. Vernon.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed to Hughey Funeral Home, P.O. Box 721, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.
