Wendell L. "Wink" Taylor, 74, of Mt. Vernon died 12:50 p.m. March 29, 1998, in an auto accident on Route 148 at the I-57 overpass.

He was employed at Ernst and Ernst CPA at Indianapolis and later was the vice president and treasurer of Nelson Concrete Co., with offices in Mt. Vernon, Champaign, East St. Louis and Evansville, Ind., and Indianapolis, and then was with the Carpenter School Bus Mfg. Co. in Mitchell, Ind. He then was with Memco Inc. in Mt. Vernon as comptroller until retirement.

Mr. Taylor was born Aug. 26, 1923, in Ina, a son of Herman and Vallie (Drennan) Taylor.

He first married Jean A. Adams in Mt. Vernon on Sept. 20, 1946, and she died Aug. 22, 1978.

He then married Thelma Morrison Myers, who died Dec. 1, 1986.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Hughey Funeral Home with Mr. J. Howard Kraps officiating. Burial will be in Kirk Cemetery, Ina. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Hughey Funeral Home. Jefferson County Shrine Club walk-through services will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at the Hughey Funeral Home.

Mr. Taylor is survived by one son, William (Bill) Taylor and wife Joy of Corydon, Ind., one daughter, Janice Samargo and husband Frank of Morgantown, W. Va.; three grandchildren, Kelly Gangwer, Paula Taylor and Matthew Gangwer; and a special friend, Florice Poore of Mt. Vernon.

Mr. Taylor was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, an infant daughter, and stepfather, Dewey Ray.

He was a member of Central Christian Church. He was past president and director of the Illinois Concrete Pipe Association, past member of the National Association of Manufacturers, a member of Mt. Vernon Masonic Lodge 31 A. F. & A. M., Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Southern Illinois, Ainad Shrine Temple of East St. Louis, Jefferson County Shrine Club, Mt. Vernon Elks Lodge 819, and Green Hills Golf Club. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the engineers in China, Burma and India and was active in the construction of an aviation gas pipeline in the CBI Theater, from Calcutta, India through Burma to China. He graduated from Ina Grade school, Mt. Vernon Township High School in 1941 and the University of Evansville.
