Vernon B. Underwood
Vernon B. UNDERWOOD, passed away February 8, 1998 in Yuma, Arizona. He was born on November 27, 1911 in Mt. Vernon Illinois to William A. UNDERWOOD and Florence (Oliver) UNDERWOOD. He attended Mt. Vernon High School and excelled in track and football. He married Aline KNOX on May 21, 1933. They were looking forward to their 65th wedding anniversary. Vernon and Aline settled in California where he worked two full time jobs for 20 years, as a boilermaker and psychiatric technician. There, he and Aline raised three sons, Vernon Jr., Jan and Rex. After retirement he and his wife moved to Crescent, Oregon where he worked as custodian and bus driver at Gilchrist School. He returned to Mt. Vernon for several years to do maintenance work. The last 13 years Vernon and Aline spent as "snowbirds", wintering in Yuma, Arizona and summering Crescent. Vernon is survived by his wife, Aline, and three sons, Vernon, Jr., of Palm Desert, and Jan and Rex of Crescent.
