John Waite
John Waite was born in Yorkshire England about Aug. 1, 1830 and died near Mt. Vernon, Ill., Sept 26, 1900. He immigrated to America in 1850 and married Minerva Katherine Johnson Oct. 24, 1851, since which time he has resided in Jefferson County, Ill. Nine children blessed this marriage, 6 of whom still live. His wife died Oct 5, 1872 and on July 17, 1873 he married Mrs. Elizabeth Burg of Macon, Ill. Who with the four sons of this 2nd union survive him. On Sept 1, 1861 he enlisted in Co. 1 Ill 44 Infantry in which for 3 years he served his adopted Country. In the engagement at Reseca he was wounded losing his right arm, May 14th 1864, and he was discharged Sept 15, 1864. Next to the Banner of Emanuel, he prized coming to America united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. His last hours were full of Praise to the Father of Mercy & of joyful expressions of victorious faith in the Savior of Sinners. His funeral occurred in Mt. Vernon, Ill in the 1st Methodist Episcopal Church. A large number of old soldiers attended his funeral.
