Charles William (Bill) Wetzer, 79, of Route 1, Opdyke, died 7:55 p.m. July 3, 1997, at his home.

He was a retired truck driver for the Spector Freight Company.

Mr. Wetzer was born Sept. 7, 1917, in Mt. Vernon, a son of John and Goldie (Thompson) Wetzer.

May 20, 1951, in Piggott, Ark., he married Alyce E. Thomas who died Nov. 1, 1995.

Services will be 1 p.m. Sunday at the Hughey Funeral Home with the Rev. Everett Lemay and Fr. Melvin Vandeloo officiating. Burial will be in the Woodlawn-Oddfellows Cemetery in Woodlawn. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 141 of Mt. Vernon. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Hughey Funeral Home.

Mr. Wetzer is survived by two daughters, Judith and husband Bo Casserberg of Knife River, Minn., and Dana Duva of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Anna Hill of Mt. Vernon, Velma Dare of Little Rock, Ark., and Ruth Hodges of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; one sister-in-law, Lois Hodge of Mt. Vernon; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the American Legion Post 141 of Mt. Vernon, VFW Post 1376 of Mt. Vernon, Mt. Vernon Moose Lodge 755, Mt. Vernon Eagles Lodge and the Mt. Vernon Gun & Sportsman Club.

Mr. Wetzer was also a member of the military funeral detail at American Legion Post 141 for many years.

Mr. Wetzer is preceded in death by his parents, wife and three sisters.
