Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. in Mary Queen of Peace Church, Pottsville, by the Rev. James Mihalak. Interment will be in Indiantown Gap national Cemetery.

Born in Pottsville, July 13 1919, he was the son of the late Vern and Maude Butler Whalen. He lived in Pottsville most of his life.

Note from Sandy: this is an error - his W II draft card shows he was born in Streator, IL. He and his parents and two older brothers are living in Groveland Twp, La Salle Co, IL in 1920 census. My grandfather says he is a "Farm Manager" on the that census record. By 1930 census they are back living in Bluford, IL. Howard's photo is in the WHTS yearbook as part of Bluford High School class of 1936.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a carpenter employed as a union worker throughout the area.

He was of the Catholic faith.

He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local Union No. 76.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Glen.

Surviving are his wife, the former Catherine Lecher, to whom he was married 53 years; two sons, John H., Birdsboro, and Robert J., Pottsville; a daughter, Susan M. Whalen, Bangor; a brother, Noel, Lodi, Calif.; five grandchildren.
