Mrs. May Wetzel Dies Early Today; Funeral Sunday

Mrs. May Leona Wetzel of 1508 North street died at 5:20 a.m. today at Franklin County Hospital in Benton. She was 79 years, one month, and six days old.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pulley Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Robert Freytag officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Pulley Funeral Home, where friends may call after 2 p.m. Saturday.

Mrs. Wetzel was born December 23, 1880, in Dahlgren, the daughter of William and Samantha (Gregory) Williamson.

On October 19, 1898, she was married to Charles H. Wetzel, who preceded her in death on Mar. 16, 1952.

For many years Mrs. Wetzel was a gracious leader in Mt. Vernon civic and social circles. She served as president of the Federated Women's Club and the garden club. She had a great interest in flowers.

Her husband was a well-known merchant. He served as a member of the city council and was also a member of city boards, including the zoning commission.

After Mr. Wenzel's death, she lived for a time in the southwest on the ocean side in California, but she always returned to the town and the friends she loved best. She suffered a stroke a week ago and was removed to the Benton hospital, where one of her daughters is a nurse.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Bernadine Greenwald of Prescott, Az., and Mrs. Jean Simmons of West Frankfort; and two grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents, a son, and a daughter.

Mrs. Wetzel was an active member of the First Presbyterian church.
