Sisters Ophelia Josephine & Alice Mitchell (From the collection of Elizabeth (Sledge) Sammons) Photo on left was taken by J.G. Morgan, Mt. Vernon, IL. The handwriting on the back says "Aunt Alice Brookman & sister, Josephine Sledge". Photo on right was taken by Sledge Studios, Bluford, IL. The handwriting on the back states "Mother and Aunt Alice Brookman" They were the daughters of Thomas and Tabitha Jane (Hudson) Mitchell. Both born in Tennessee. Ophelia Josephine was born 12 September 1847. She married Zebulon Lewis Sledge II on April 16, 1868 in Jefferson County, IL Their son William, operated Sledge Studios, Bluford, IL Alice L. b. 1849 was married first to Thomas J. Brookman on 9 December 1871. On 12 January 1884, she married William R. Brookman, they were divorced. She died 1933 in Missouri and is buried at Atkinson Cemetery in Jefferson County, IL
Ophelia Josephine (Mitchell) Sledge
Picture belonged to Elizabeth Sammons (Mrs. James Claude Sammons). Ophelia Josephine was the oldest child of Thomas and Tabitha Jane (Hudson) Mitchell, born in Tennessee on 12 September 1847. She married Zebulon Lewis Sledge II on 16 April 1868 in Jefferson County. They were parents of nine children. Their oldest child, Walter, died in childhood. Other children:
Josephine and Zebulon are buried at Harmony Cemetery, Jefferson County, Illinois along with four children: Sarah Jane, John Oliver, Metta, and Elizabeth Will Mitchell Family

Ophelia was the mother of the photo collector Elizabeth "Sledge" Sammons. |
