Frances Ellen Vaughn was the daughter of Zebulon Lewis (I) and Sarah Nancy (Warren) Sledge, born 19 April 1856 in Jefferson County, Illinois.

Elizabeth Sammons was the daughter of her brother and Ophelia Josephine (Mitchell) Sledge. ThusFrances Ellen was her aunt.

Frances Ellen married FJohn Ellis Vaughn in Jefferson County on 15 June 1875. He was born 17 December 1846 to Charles G. and Virginia Jane (Huston) Vaughn. John worked in coal strip mines in the area. Frances died on 18 August 1923 and John died 18 November 1892 in Jefferson County, Illinois. Both are buried at Hopewell Cemetery.

Frances is listed as a widow (age 54) on the 1910 Stephens County, Oklahoma, census with children:
Orley .- 24,
Frank E.. - 20,
Cora Ethel .- 18,
Nina May. - 13, and John T. - 7 year old grandson.

Some researchers say that Frances married a Wilson and that Nina May was born to them.

1910 Oklahoma Census shows that Frances Ellen had nine children, eight living.

Minnie Emily, born 29 July 1887, the 6th child, wrote the article following this page about her mother's memories of her grandfather, Zebulon Lewis Sledge I.
