On December 3, 1818, Illinois was admitted as the twenty-first state of the Union. Just a few months later on March 26, 1819, Jefferson County was organized by the settlers in the area.

The photo to the right is the 5th District Appellate Court in Mt. Vernon which hears cases appealed from trial courts in 48 counties (Alexander, Bond, Champaign, Christian, Clark, Clay, Clinton, Coles, Crawford, Cumberland, DeWitt, Douglas, Edgar, Edwards, Effingham, Fayette, Franklin, Gallatin, Hamilton, Hardin, Jackson, Jasper, Jefferson, Johnson, Lawrence, Macon, Madison, Marion, Massac, Monroe, Montgomery, Moultrie, Perry, Piatt, Pope, Pulaski, Randolph, Richland, Saline, Shelby, St. Clair, Union, Vermillion, Wabash, Washington, Wayne, White, and Williamson).
